Workforce Development
Small Press Incubator Program
From manuscript to marketplace — turning creative talent into real economic opportunity.
About the Program
The Small Press Incubator Program is not a writing class. It is a business creation program that uses publishing as the vehicle.
SPIP was designed with one specific population in mind — people in underrepresented communities who have real talent and real drive but have been told that entrepreneurship requires capital they don't have. Brick and mortar stores. Inventory. Commercial leases. SPIP was built to eliminate every one of those barriers.
All you need to participate is a laptop and something to say. In 12 weeks you will go from idea to published author to registered business owner. By the time you complete the program you will have a published product generating real revenue, a registered Hartford business with a legitimate legal structure, an Employer Identification Number, sales tax registration, and a business bank account.
This is not theory. This is not inspiration. This is a real pathway to economic independence — built specifically for people who have been left out of the traditional entrepreneurship conversation.

What Participants Build
SPIP participants don't just learn — they produce. Over 12 weeks each participant develops and publishes an original work, establishes a legal business entity in the State of Connecticut, obtains an EIN from the IRS, registers for Sales and Use Tax with the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services, opens a dedicated business bank account, and begins actively selling their published work to real customers.
Every element of the program is designed to result in something tangible — a product, a business, and a revenue stream that belongs entirely to the participant.
What Participants Learn
The curriculum covers every stage of the publishing and business formation process. Participants learn manuscript development and story structure, cover design and book formatting, independent publishing platforms and distribution channels, pricing strategy and profit margins, business registration and legal compliance, and sales and marketing fundamentals.
No prior publishing or business experience is required. If you have a story, an idea, or a message — we will show you how to turn it into a product and a business.
Who This Program Is For
SPIP is designed for adults 18 and older in Hartford and surrounding communities who are ready to take their creativity seriously as an economic tool. Whether you have never written a word professionally or have been writing for years without a clear path to income — this program was built for you.
This is workforce development designed for real life. No barriers. No cost. Just results.
